Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) retained his WBC heavyweight title with a ninth round knockout against Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday.
Szpilka came into the fight with a lot of drive, motivated by the chance to win the world title. This drive served Szpilka well, enabling him to land shots at a higher rate than Wilder throughout the bout.
However, as the fight progressed, Wilder was landing the better, cleaner punches, and doing so frequently.
In the end, Wilder’s power was enough to do the job against a limited Szpilka. A devastating right hand caught Szpilka unawares in the ninth round, ending the contest.
Overall, Wilder seems to have improved his game. But, he’s still not the finished article and he still hasn’t faced a world class opponent.
