Nicholas Walters (26-0-1, 21 KOs) and little known super featherweight Jason Sosa (18-1-4, 14 KOs) battled to a majority draw over 10 rounds at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York on Saturday.
Walters clearly dominated the encounter, however the judges saw it differently to most of us, scoring the bout 96-94 in favour of Sosa, and 95-95 and 95-95.
The result was definitely a controversial one and it was widely criticised by pundits. Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank, who promote both boxers was not happy either. He told ESPN.com “They all stink. They shouldn’t judge again”.
Even the Compubox statistics disagreed with the decision showing that Walters landed 45% of his punches in the bout in comparison to Sosa’s 19%.
Both fighters proved their power in the fight but Walters definitely landed the cleaner shots and was able to rock Sosa in both the fifth and seventh rounds.
After the fight Walters said “I’m in total shock. I just can’t believe it”. Sosa on the other hand was convinced he had done enough to win the fight and said “I was more active, I was more aggressive, I got better shots in, so I’m disappointed it was a draw”.
