IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1, 25KOs) looks set to square off against Jean Pascal (30-3-1, 17KOs) for the second time.
Dan Rafael of ESPN revealed that the rematch, scheduled for January 2016, is part of a new three-fight deal with HBO.
This exciting deal begins with a rematch against Jean Pascal and was also set to feature both Adonis Stevenson and Andre Ward.
A highly anticipated unification clash with WBC light heavyweight champion, Adonis Stevenson, is now unlikely according to Kovalev’s promoter, Kathy Duva.
“We tried very hard, through Jean Bedard and Pierre Duc of InterBox [Pascal’s promoters] during recent weeks, to come to an agreement for Stevenson to fight Pascal in December or January, and for the winner to fight Sergey in the spring of 2016.”
In the end, the offer Kovalev’s team put forward was never accepted and the two fighters are looking at different options.
As for Pascal vs. Kovalev, the pair met in the not too distant past with Kovalev winning by knockout in the eighth round. While some may consider the rematch a fruitless fight, corporate interests may prefer it over some of the less lucrative alternatives.
