We caught up with Paul Smith Jnr for a quick chat at the Crolla vs. Barroso press conference in Manchester.
During the interview, Smith admitted he still wants to get his hands on a world title and currently has his aim firmly locked on the WBA super middleweight champion, Felix Sturm.
Smith who has been out of the ring since last June is looking to get rid of any ring rust with a quick succession of tune-up bouts in the coming months before pushing for another world title shot.
Although he is unsure who his next opponent will be Smith is keen to get back in the ring. “Just the six and eight-rounders, just to see – you know? Just to get back in and get a win under my belt, get the rust off and get the cobwebs off,” said Smith. “It’ll be 10 months since I last fought, I fought Andre Ward in June obviously and this [fight] will be April so it’s 10 months.”
When pressed for names of potential future opponents, Smith said “Felix Sturm’s the one I’m after, he’s the fight I’m trying to get. De Carolis has the WBA [regular] title. It’s not necessarily the men, it’s the belt. You know, I want to fight for a title, I want to be a world champion and at the minute they’ve got the belts.”
