Nike has officially dropped eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao, due to his statements relating to same-sex marriage made during an interview, broadcast on TV5 in the Philippines.
Pacquiao, who claimed “If we approve of male couples or female couples, then man is worse than an animal,” has faced a huge backlash on social media.
Pacquiao was quick to apologise for his comments, releasing a number of messages across his social media channels, however, it was too little too late and his long time sponsor, Nike, decided to end their decade-long relationship.
Nike released a statement saying, “We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent.”
“Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community.”
“We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”
