David Lemieux (34-3, 31KOs) was scheduled to face James De la Rosa (23-3, 13KOs) on Saturday at the Olympia Theatre in Montreal, Canada. However, the former IBF middleweight champion failed to make the 163lb catchweight finding himself more two pounds over the agreed limit at 165.6 lbs and as a result the fight was called off.
An unsuccessful attempt was made to iron out a deal with De la Rosa who himself made weight and refused to budge from the agreed terms.
Lemieux, who was making his first return to the ring since he was sensationally stopped by Gennady Golovkin last October was hoping this fight would put him in contention for another world title shot. Such plans will now either be delayed or leave Lemieux in the lion’s den without a tune-up.
