IBF, IBO and WBA middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), successfully defended his IBF crown at The Forum in Inglewood on Saturday night, brutally destroying his mandatory challenger, Dominic Wade (18-0, 12KOs), with a second round stoppage.
Wade, although regarded as a huge underdog, certainly didn’t come just to make up the numbers – he wanted to fight.
However, so did Golovkin and toward the end of the first round, Wade got his first taste of Golovkin’s power when caught with a mean right which sent him crashing to the canvas. Wade managed to recover and see out the round but things weren’t going to get any better for him in the second round.
With around a minute left in the second round, Wade was once again caught with a mean right sending him to the canvas for the second time and barely making it back to his feet.
Seconds later and another right sent Wade back to the canvas and referee, Jack Reiss, counted Wade out with just over 20 seconds remaining in the second round.
Perhaps the most important part of the night came in a post-fight interview with Golovkin when he sent a simple yet powerful message to WBC middleweight champion, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – “Give me my belt.”
