Danny Garcia (31-0) has decided against a rematch with Amir Khan (31-3) and opted instead to fight Robert Guerrero (33-3-1).
Rumours of a potential rematch between Khan and Garcia started to spread after Floyd Mayweather retired. As Floyd would be vacating his WBC title, a new champion would need to be appointed. Khan, the WBC silver champion, who is currently ranked number one at 147lbs and Garcia who is ranked number two looked likely to square off in a much anticipated rematch.
Floyd failed to vacate his title. So, in early November, at the WBC convention, Floyd was stripped, made “emeritus champion,” and a fight between Khan and Garcia was mandated for the vacant belt.
Just days after the convention a source close to Khan told BNtv that since negotiations with Pacquiao weren’t progressing Khan was exploring the potential fight with Garcia.
A rematch betwen Khan and Garcia is an exciting prospect but it is unfortunately not on the cards for the time being. According to our source, Khan pursued the bout but Garcia has decided against a rematch with Khan and chosen to fight Robert Guerrero instead.
Garcia tweeted that a fight date would be announced for his next opponent within the next two weeks. So, an official announcement on his next opponent can be expected soon.
