Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) defeated former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs), claiming a 12 round unanimous decision at the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois.

At the end of the contest, the judges at ringside scored the bout 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112 – all in favour of Fonfara.

In the opening rounds, Cleverly looked to be in control, but things slowly went downhill from the fourth round for the Welshman and he began to slow with his punches seeming unusually empty.

During the fifth round, Cleverly decided that a bit of showboating was needed to please the audience and dramatically wound his arm up like a windmill before throwing shots at Fonfara.

In the seventh, Cleverly’s nose was bust open and he continued to take heavy shots to the head without offering anything in return.

By the ninth round, Fonfara had severely swelled Cleverly’s nose. So much so, that by the end of the round, the Welshman’s nose was inspected by the doctor who allowed the fight to continue.

The contest saw an impressive output from both fighters with 2,524 punches thrown and 936 landed in total during the bout.
