Five audacious jumps in weight

Roy Jones Jnr vs John Ruiz

Amir Khan vs Saul Alvarez

Just months before Brook stepped up to face Golovkin, Kell’s long-time domestic rival Amir Khan was busy bulking up his body to tackle Golovkin’s future nemesis: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The Khan-Alvarez fight appeared almost out of the blue with all parties keeping quiet, which is a feat in itself given the relentless 24-hour news and gossip cycle that is social media.

During the fight, Amir was using his customary fast hands and movement to give heavier Canelo his fair share of problems in the early going. It seemed, however, that it was only a matter of time before Canelo caught up with the sprightly Bolton boxer. When the Mexican finally tracked down Khan, it was with devastating consequences. Feinting to the body, Alvarez had Khan’s arms flailing, his familiarly porous defence exposed and the chin ripe for picking. A flush right hand parted Amir from his senses. Lying prone on the canvas there was a genuine concern for the visitor, who eventually regained consciousness and sheepishly moved on to the next challenge.
