WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, has finally claimed a victory over his Russian nemesis, Alexander Povetkin. However, the victory was claimed in court, and not in the ring.

Wilder’s promoter Lou DiBella tweeted that a federal court in Manhattan had ruled in favour of Wilder in their lawsuit against Povetkin and his promoter, Andrey Ryabinsky.

Wilder claimed for $5 million dollars in damages after his fight with Povetkin was cancelled on May 21st, 2016 when Povetkin tested positive for meldonium, a banned substance.

After Povetkin’s failed drugs test the WBC cancelled his scheduled bout with Wilder, just six days before the fight was set to take place. As a result, Wilder lost $4.5 million dollars – his share of the purse.
