IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale (22-1) overcame veteran Lucian Bute (32-3) in a closely fought contest that was definitely closer than the story told by the judges scorecards.
DeGale was forced to work hard to keep hold of his title and found it hard to control the bout especially in the latter half when Bute really found his footing. In the final six rounds Bute was able to effectively apply sufficient pressure and was clearly the superior fighter.
However, the judges favoured DeGale’s good movement and pot shot attacks with their final scorecards of 116-112 and 117-111 (twice). It is, however, fair to say that the scorecards were slightly wide. A score of 115-113 in favour of DeGale is perhaps a more accurate assessment but one could also make a serious argument for a draw.
Perhaps more than anything this bout proved Bute still has a lot to offer at this level and is unlikely to hang up his gloves anytime soon.
