This week Saul Alvarez (46-1-1) was given the green light by the WBC to make an interim defence of his middleweight belt before June 2016. His promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, is already eyeing potential candidates for the Mexican star.
De La Hoya told KO Artist Sports that he has three boxers on his shortlist and will start work on negotiations in the next few weeks.
Interestingly one of the fighters De La Hoya is looking to match with Canelo is Amir Khan (31-3). De La Hoya said he loves the idea of such a fight, saying it will make a fan-friendly and action packed contest.
Khan has only fought three times at 147lbs. In order to the Canelo fight, he would need to move up again and take the fight at 155lbs. Something which De La Hoya feels is not a problem.
“You know one fight I wouldn’t mind putting together down the road or whenever is Amir Khan vs. Canelo,” said, De La Hoya. “I wouldn’t mind seeing that. I think Amir Khan is a fighter who can move up to 154 and a fighter who can fight at 47. See, Amir Khan is a fighter who is very versatile, he’s a fan favourite fighter. Think about his fights; he’s always in an exciting fight. He goes down, he gets back up – he’s exciting. So I think Amir Khan vs. Canelo would be very interesting”.
Khan is already in negotiations with Manny Pacquiao and he could also meet IBF welterweight champion, Kell Brook, next summer. So, if De La Hoya does want to make a fight with Khan then he needs to pick up the phone soon.
