British Lightweight Champion Scott Cardle (19-0) overcame Sean Dodd (10-2), in his first title defense, with a twelfth round stoppage at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.
Cardle was behind on the scorecards, with a minute left in the fight when he let loose a vicious flurry, forcing referee Terry O’Connor to step in.
Dodd had the upper-hand for the majority of the bout and it seemed like we would have a new British Champion by the end of the night. Cardle, however, was able to hold on – and unleash some deadly firepower right at the last minute – but was also the first to admit Dodd was the better fighter on the night.
In a post-fight interview Cardle showed sportsmanlike conduct stating “I have never been tested like this,” he went on to say “I really had to grit my teeth at times in that fight. For me, I was behind in every round so the only way was to knock him out. He is a warrior and he really dug deep. I will give him a rematch, he deserves it.”
