Callum Smith: You will now see the best of me at light-heavy

Callum Smith began his campaign to become a two-weight world champion in spectacular fashion.
The former WBA Super, WBC Diamond and Ring Magazine super-middleweight king stepped up to light-heavyweight on Saturday night at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Smith, 31, lost to Saul Alvarez last December in San Antonio, Texas, succumbing his global honours to the Mexican in the process.
But the Liverpudlian –– who was undefeated before being outpointed by ‘Canelo’ –– moved up in weight, exclusively live on DAZN and Sky Sports Box Office, against Dominican Republic native Lenin Castillo.
Castillo, who dropped to 21-4-1 (16 KOs) in defeat against ‘Mundo’, had been in the ring against WBA world champion Dmitry Bivol as recently as October 2019.
But the 33-year-old was rushed to hospital after being removed from the ring via a stretcher after being knocked out inside two rounds by Smith.
Smith wasted little time in making his mark in the 175lb division, peppering Castillo with shots before unleashing a stunning right hand which left the import stricken and shaking on the canvas.
And while Smith, who had his first fight under the tutelage of Buddy McGirt after leaving Joe Gallagher, admitted to the knockout being “scary”, he now thinks that up at 12-stone seven, the best of him will be seen.
“There was a lot of change in there,” said Smith, who was fighting for the first time in nine months. “There was a lot of talk about how I would be at 175 pounds, how I’d be after coming back from a loss and how I’d be under a new trainer, but I felt good in there.”
“The knockout wasn’t nice to see and boxing’s a sport at the end of the day,” Smith added. “But the win was the most important thing.
“I know I’ve carried my power up to 175 and it’s suited me better, it’s the best I’ve felt in a long time and I feel like I put down a marker to the other champions.
“There was a lot at stake for me, my new trainer has improved me massively and I believe you will now start to see the best of me.”
