Flyweight contender, Mohammad Waseem, has been moved into the number one contender spot by the WBC.
Waseem claimed the WBC Silver Title in just his fourth outing as a professional when he overcame Jether Olivia in July 2016.
The Pakistani star, then successfully defended the belt in November, claiming a unanimous decision victory over Giemel Magramo.
As the WBC number one contender, Waseem is likely to fight a final eliminator, however, he could find himself in a world title bout with the WBC Champion, Daigo Higa, sooner rather than later.
A proud Waseem feels his new status in the WBC will drive him on to world title glory.
“It is a great honour for me to become the umber one contender,” said Waseem, speaking to Pakistani outlet ‘The News’. “It will further motivate me and instill more power and energy in me, which will help me in my career.”
Waseem’s promoter, Andy Kim, is still waiting to hear from the WBC about the next step for the Pakistani flyweight.
“I am waiting for the WBC’s confirmation,” Kim said. “It was going to be world title eliminator but now there are some changes, and there is also a chance that Waseem could challenge for the world title. Daigo Higa of Japan may be our target.”
